Richard teaches trumpet, French horn, composition and music theory from his home in the Lakeview area. He has been 1st horn of the Regina Symphony since 2003, and has been composing music since 1975. He is a professional player who teaches a more holistic approach to brass

Artime Music Studio offers violin, voice, and piano lessons in home-like, friendly, and safe environment. The Flatland Fiddling Studio is a lesson space for all ages of learning, and for all types fiddle music! The core of the studio is its focus on private lessons, personalized for each student and their learning goals, with basic skill building using both contemporary and classical technique. The secondary mission of the studio is to build community through group lessons, jams, workshops, and perhaps even concerts! All instruction done by studio owner, Emily Dubois.

Dr. Vanessa Klassen is an avid performer and teacher hailing from Kindersley SK. She has performed and presented at music festivals such as the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest®, the Brandon University Clarinet Festival, and Klarinet Kerfuffle (Saskatoon SK). She recently performed the world premiere of Paul Suchan’s “Middle of Somewhere” alongside the University of Saskatchewan Jazz Ensemble. In 2023 she joined the Regina Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal clarinettist.

In addition to performing and operating a woodwind studio, Vanessa creates fun arrangements for woodwind ensembles which are sold worldwide, also featuring her own recordings on her YouTube channel, “ClarinetColours.” She aspires to instill a love of music-making in her students by using a variety of teaching methods, including playing along with her students. Dr. Klassen’s passion for music and teaching has emanated from her principal clarinet teachers: Dr. Caroline Hartig, Dr. Catherine Wood, and Steve Mealey. She holds degrees from The Ohio State University (DMA ’22, MM ’18) and Brandon University (BMus ’16).


Powley, Carter

Carter Powley is an active freelance saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer/arranger, and educator, holding degrees in music composition and education from the University of Regina. His repertoire both as a player and writer ranges from jazz to classical, funk, rock, Latin, blues, and more.

His influences and idols have included Charles Mingus, Booker Ervin, and Eric Dolphy and he has shared the stage with Canadian jazz icon P.J. Perry, guitar virtuoso Jack Semple, long-time jazz bassist Peter Dyksman, pianist Bob Moyer and his Big Band, Michael Kaeshammer, vocalist Kevin Mohagany, Karen Plato, Jason Marsalis, Ranee Lee, singer/songwriter and Juno nominee Alysha Brilla, and ‘Tower of Power’ drummer Herman Matthews.

Teachers have ranged from jazz pianist Ken Jefferson to classical saxophonist Karen Finnsson and composer Alain Perron. Many have recognized Powley’s gifts both for writing and playing and as a freshman at the U of R he had his works performed by professional orchestras in Kitchener-Waterloo and Regina. Carter can be found performing in many settings in Regina and throughout Saskatchewan and beyond.
